Our role and purpose
Our responsibilities
1
The Avenue
The Trust is responsible for the upkeep of The Avenue, the land on each side of the road from Pound Hill to Drove Lane. This involves checking and maintaining the trees along the Avenue, planting spring bulbs and cutting the grass.
To help cover the costs, we have recently launched a 'Friends of The Avenue' programme .
2
Markets and Fairs
We are responsible for collecting all fees from the markets and events in Broad Street including the annual Watercress Festival and the Sheep Fair, the weekly Thursday and monthly Sunday markets as well as occasional specialist markets.
We are also responsible for the upkeep of the trees along Broad Street.
3
The Eel House
The Eel House was saved from partial collapse by a number of local organisations which jointly funded its restoration. The Trust acts as the umbrella organisation under which these bodies continue support and maintain it.
The Eel House is open to the public on a number of days each year where they can see first-hand the restoration of this historic building.
4
The Old Fire Station & Alresford Museum
As landlord of the 1881 building, we are responsible for its upkeep. It currently houses Andrew Lawes' picture framing business and the Alresford Museum.
The Alresford Museum is housed in the Engine House of the Old Fire Station. The centrepiece of its exhibition is the old Tichborne Park Steamer Fire Engine. There are open days each year.
5
The Minibus
The community minibus service was started over 50 years ago to take the elderly and disabled to appointments, to go shopping or on occasional day trips. It is run by volunteers and funded through a combination of grants, donations and Trust reserves.
The minibus is also available for the use of community groups, charities and to support local events.
6
Arthur Stowell Fund
The Town Trust promotes local history through the Arthur Stowell Fund for history and education.
